1895年12月28日，法国卢米埃兄弟在巴黎的一间餐厅里向35位观众放映了《火车到站》等短片，当时那张题为《卢米埃电影》的海报可能是世界上第一张电影海报。
早期的电影海报是纯粹为了电影的上片做宣传广告用途，就如卖场中的大多数促销海报招贴，是用手工绘制的，又称手绘电影海报。其真迹已较少见，好莱坞早期著名影片《飘》，《蒂凡尼的早餐》，《卡萨布兰卡》当初的海报都是手绘的，画面精美细致，仍有很高的艺术价值。
随着电影的普及，电影海报制作技术的进步，电影海报本身也因其画面精美，表现手法独特，文化内涵丰富，成为了一种艺术品，具有欣赏和收藏价值。但国外的海报收藏家一般只收藏原版电影海报，当然其头版及前几版更因其数量稀少升值潜力巨大而备受宠爱。
